Oshawa Centre Media Preview Event

Yesterday I was lucky enough to attend the Media Preview Event for the Grand Opening (happening September 29) of the newly renovated Oshawa Centre. The $230 million expansion brings 60 new stores, a new 1000 – seat food court, two brand new full service restaurants: Kelsey’s (which is already open) and Baxter’s Landing (opening December of this year), 250 underground parking spaces and so much more!

Some of the new stores include: Adidas, Forever 21 (which is 20,000 sq ft!), Starbucks (in the brand new food court), Skechers, and an H&M flagship store (YES!) Also, just announced yesterday…a Zara and Browns Shoes, both opening Spring 2017! I cannot wait for the Zara to open. This is going to be very dangerous for me as the mall is only a five minute drive from my work…

Overall I was very impressed with the layout of the new addition to the mall and it’s hard to believe it will be done and ready to open in a week!

Pink Lemon Decor

Happy first day of Summer! I figured this was a great post for today.

I am a big fan of supporting local small businesses, especially when the owner is a friend of mine.

I met Amber a few years ago through a mutual friend and clicked with her immediately. Not only did she have a son the same age as Maxton, she had an awesome personality and I could picture a few ladies nights in our future. Since then, she has had another little boy who is also the same age as Everly. It’s fun to watch all these crazy kids play together.

She recently took a huge leap of faith and left her job to be a stay-at-home-mommy and pursue a passion of hers. Let me tell you, this girl has some SERIOUS TALENT. Her and her hubby recently purchased a new home and she has decorated it beautifully with many of her handmade creations.

I asked Amber what her inspiration was in starting up Pink Lemon Decor…

“Painting was always something I loved. I was always a crafter, DIY’er, and loved making anything for my home. When I had my first baby, all of those things were put on hold. Fast forward a few years later and painting has become my passion! I’m now a stay at home mom with 2 sweet boys and have pink lemon as my creative outlet!

I really love bringing ideas to life and seeing them admired in someone’s home. It started with family and friends asking me to make them signs or just something special for their home. It quickly evolved into something much more and that’s how Pink Lemon was born. My style is always evolving… although I just love rustic, farmhouse chic! I’m a perfectionist so a lot of time goes into planning, designing and actually painting.

Each sign is hand-cut, sanded, primed and painted or stained by yours truly. I always want something to be ‘perfectly you!'”

How awesome are these pieces?! I told you this girl has talent! She puts her heart and soul into every piece and the end result is the proof.

Danica’s Scarves Review

Before Christmas I was on the hunt for a nice blanket scarf. I was chatting with a girlfriend of mine and she had mentioned a local business that sells a variety of blanket scarves for a great price.

I decided to check out her Facebook page and loved the patterns I saw. This one caught my eye right away and I contacted her immediately. She was quick to reply and had the one I selected in stock, I was able to pick it up the next day. (She is seconds away from my daughter’s daycare so it worked out.)

This is the one I chose:

I loved all of the colours in this pattern and thought it would be perfect for spring, winter and fall.

This scarf is keeping me warm these days with the -10 degree Celsius weather we have been having.

Check out her website, Danica’s Scarves for her selection, as well as some of her other products.

Enter the promo code “mamasbabysteps” at checkout for $5 off your blanket scarf order from now until January 31, 2016.

Review of Artful Monkeys, Personalized Invitations and Party Printables

In the past, for the kid’s birthday invitations, I chose to order them through Shutterfly. Don’t get me wrong, Shutterfly is great, but this year I wanted something a little more personal and “homemade”.

For Maxton’s 4th birthday party, I decided to do a Superhero Theme (he LOVES Spiderman, The Hulk, Captain America etc.) and wanted to find the perfect invite to showcase this. So, I turned to Etsy to see what I could find. I wanted a shop that would create a digital image of the invite so I could email, text and/or print the invites myself.

So I searched “Superhero Birthday Invitations” and came across one that I LOVED. The shop’s name is Artful Monkeys, and she is based in the UK.

I chose the Superhero party invite ($14.25 CAD) and emailed the shop owner as soon as I saw it. She replied immediately and once I sent her the details, she had the completed invite emailed to me within a few hours! I couldn’t believe how quick and affordable they were. I was so happy with how it turned out, I couldn’t wait to send them out to all of Maxton’s little party guests!

I blocked out the location of the party, but the whole thing looks fantastic! I am so pleased with how it turned out and the turnaround time for the completed invitation.

If you are looking for any invitations or party packs, check out Artful Monkeys. We have teamed up to save you 15% off your order until October 31, 2015, by entering code HWBLOG15.  So head on over to her shop today!

Gifts for Him

I love Christmas and everything that comes with it. The only challenge I seem to run into each year, is finding the perfect gift for that special someone. My mom used to be the hardest person to buy for, but for the past couple of years, she has been creating a Dropbox and updating with ideas regularly – this makes things so much easier. Now the person most difficult to buy for is Steve. What does he need versus what does he want. Here are a few gift ideas for the special guy in your life!

Amazeballs $24.50 – Indigo

Two times the power of square drink stones, they will keep your drink colder for longer. Made from food safe stainless steel, filled with a specially formulated food-safe glycerin gel that freezes without diluting your drink. Freeze for four hours and keep your drink cool for up to 45 minutes.

Nike + Fuelband SE $99.99 – SportChek

pSPCK1-19396574dtThis device is designed to track the intensity of workouts, counts steps, tell time, display your progress in real time, sync with your iOS or Android device, and it has Bluetooth. What a great way to track your activity – a great gift to go along with a New Year’s resolution.

The Nest Learning Thermostat $249.99 – Best Buy

This fancy gadget is a sleek and intelligent heating and cooling system. This handy gadget quickly learns your habits in approximately one week, programming itself based on your schedule and preferred temperature settings – glowing blue for air conditioning, red for heat, and black if it is off. It has Wi-Fi Connectivity which allows you to access it from your laptop, smartphone or tablet to change the temperature, view whether or not you are saving energy and more! While connected to Wi-Fi, it can also monitor the weather to understand how the temperature affects your energy use.  It is a little pricey but it is designed to save you in energy costs in the long run.

Lambswool Mockneck Sweater in “Oatmeal heather” $69.95 – The Gap

I love this sweater. I had to include the photo of it on the model, because the photo of the sweater alone did not do it justice. It is 55% lambswool and 45% Nylon and is also available in a navy blue colour.

The North Face Etip Glove $45 – The North Face

These warm, four-way-stretch fleece gloves are perfect for the chilly temperatures. They will not only keep his hands warm, they also feature a silicone gripper palm pattern to provide superior grip, allowing him to swipe and use his touchscreen device without exposing his hands to the cold. I love this idea!

Hopefully these ideas help with the shopping for the guy(s) in your life. Only 17 shopping days left until Christmas!
